FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS / THE BETTER PORTION

SCRIPTURES

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the GOOD PORTION, which will not be taken away from her.” – Luke 10:38-42, ESV

“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. SEEK THE KINGDOM OF GOD ABOVE ALL ELSE, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. – Matthew 6:31-33, NLT

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we TAKE CAPTIVE EVERY THOUGHT TO MAKE IT OBEDIENT TO CHRIST.” – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, NIV

We need to shift our focus. We need to put our focus on HIM. Get closer to Him, get to know Him better, delight in Him, sit at His feet. What does this mean? It means not only coming to Him when we need something, but coming to Him daily just to be with Him.

This changes everything.

It seems contradictory to everything that makes sense, but: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” [Proverbs 3:5, NIV]

Until recently, I thought I was focusing on God, because I was praying, asking questions, and trying to figure out His perfect will. But in reality, my attention was still centered on all my problems and my need for answers – I was focused on the mountain and not on the Overcomer. As a result, I felt even more overwhelmed.

Lately, something has shifted. Instead of focusing on everything I need to do or trying to solve everything instantly in my own mind, I’m choosing to fix my attention on who God is – on His character, His love. This has brought me greater peace than ever before. I worry less about my problems, I suddenly have the confidence that He’s got them covered, and my trust and faith in Jesus have grown.

This is why our thoughts matter so much. When we notice anxious or intrusive thoughts creeping in, we cannot let them develop, or they quickly begin to spiral. We must be persistent in this. Remember, “But the wisdom from above is first of all pure[James 3:17, NLT]. The moment we sense that something is off, we should pray to Jesus to take those thoughts away and make them obedient to Christ. [“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” – Philippians 4:8, NLT]

This isn’t about ignoring reality or our responsibilities – it’s about choosing where our focus belongs. I know we all have things to do, but trust me – when you start to make loving Jesus and being with Him a priority in your life, everything else will fall into place supernaturally. You will receive the peace He promises you – the peace that transcends all understanding [“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.- John 14:27, NLT and “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7, ESV]. You will no longer live in anxiety, because then you will actually hear Him – it will be the Holy Spirit making the decisions for you.

When we live life the other way around, when we focus on life first and Jesus second, then we have trouble hearing Him, then we get all these negative emotions – anxiety, worry, depression, etc., things God doesn’t want for us, then we get confused and many times lost.

Try to love Him first, just love Him, as simple as that.

You might have many questions, but God doesn’t always answer them quickly, or you might not always understand Him clearly, but simply loving Him is a great first step. This is your foundation. Build your life on that.
